Background to the Ninth Doctor
Doctor Who, the New Series, made a stellar return to our screens in 2005 after a lengthy break of 16 years. The original series ran for an incredible 26 years from 1963 to 1989.
On screen in Series One of the New Series the Ninth Doctor was played by Christopher Eccleston when the programme returned in 2005. On his regeneration the 9th Doctor finds a new companion in plucky London teenager Rose Tyler, the actress and former teen pop idol Billie Piper.
It should be noted that the Ninth Doctor books can be read in any order; and also independently of the Doctor Who television series, not necessarily following its time line. However, the books do make some references to events occuring to previous Doctors both in television episodes and in prior Doctor Who books.
